The Great and Nasty World of SEC Basketball

I just found your blog and really like it. As a Vandy fan, though, I differ with your assessment of Ogilvy. NBAdraft.net had this guy going in the first round before he dominated the U-19 in Serbia. Also, the Aussie HS structure is apparently much different than in the states, and those stats are tough to decipher b/c we don’t really know the caliber of competition or what his PT was.

A guy who works at rivals told me it sounds like he would have been a 5-star, but they can’t exactly run off to Sydney to evaluate the kid.

I know we’re really excited up here, and love the fact we’re under the radar. Between Foster, Gordon, Neltner (who stands to benefit the most from Ogilvy, IMO) and Ogilvy and Keegan Bell, we should be fine. Perhaps more overall talent, although replacing Byars will be difficult.

Anyway, love the blog and the chance to talk SEC hoops.

    Thanks,
    Dean Fox

You really think Ole Miss will do so poorly this year? We lost 3 starters which were also 3 of our top 4 scorers; however, if you look at it, we have the makings of a team that will struggle early but come on down the stretch. I don’t think anyone can argue that our frontcourt will be solid (definitely not the best in the SEC but solid). Dwayne Curtis, Jeremy Parnell, and Kenny Williams plus the addition of Malcolm White give us great size as well as mobility. We’ll most likely play three forwards and two guards. I’ll say Polyniece played very well last year as back up to Todd Abernethy and proved he can get the rack and distribute the ball. With transfer David Huertas and Senior Brian Smith we should have reliable outside shooting. My main concerns are PG performance under pressure and having a guy that can create is own shot. I doubt we will make the NCAA tounry but I do think NIT is reasonable. You can’t honestly look at last years teams and say this year’s team will be worse. Those 3 guys we lost from last year did absolutely nothing their first 3 years. All in all I think 13-17 is a little low. I’m going to say 17-13 (6-10 SEC)

Thanks for the kind words - I greatly appreciate it.

This was the incorrect post to comment on Ole Miss about. And yes…I can honestly look at last year’s team and say this one will be worse. Easily. Most who aren’t biased would see/say that as well.

i really like your blog. i plan to visit and read daily during the season. i have just one minor thorn sticking re: this excellent site and others named similarly…could you please put “men” in the title somewhere. there does exist another world, namely women’s sports. it seems disingenuous in the 21st century to assume a inclusive title (no men or women assignation) represents all. i apologize if i have probs stating what i mean. i hope you get what it is im trying to say. unlike you, im not college educated. thanks for your time.

  5. hoopsknowitall Says:

I understand your concern. However, the fact of the matter is that even per the SEC office women’s sports are called such, whereas men’s sports is without the “men” moniker.

With that said, the blog is well-known at this point, and changing its title is not a possibility. Apologies to any this offends.
